Carrots flying out of vending machines in Ohio | Marketplace From American Public Media

Carrots flying out of vending machines in Ohio | Marketplace From American Public Media

check this out it's awesome :) i love carrots.

things i love thursdays

short and sweet because this week has been long and difficult.

dolphins and clumsiness:

this twisty tree on my way to work:
and i also love TreeRock which is opposite this one on the other side of the on-ramp but i can't get a picture because i sit in the passenger side when i travel by car and it is on the driver side.

my brother lank who is rocking med school despite various impediments:
this photo was taken by a five year old.  they are short.  all their pictures look kinda like this which is neat.  i guess when i was five this was my perspective on the world too. i remember thinking about that a little bit when i was little.  i also thought (quite a bit) about how when i was a kid i wasn't going to know what it was like being a kid because i would lose my frame of reference (it would lose it's everydayness and be replaced by grown-up everydayness.) i'm not sure i agree with littleme on that one...  i mean it is surely different to be a grown-up but i am so often mistaken for a child by children that i think i may still have some of the original context left in me, or near enough, and i am thankful for that.  so i guess another thing i love is my child-like qualities (yes even the little voice.)

i love this barbie's very slutty makeup.  i don't know why.  i named her chantell and she is the A+ super mean b-word of the barbies at ava's house.   i love that i have a job where i get to play barbies regularly.  i also love that my girls are down with playing zombie barbies and vampire barbies and space barbies because regular barbies get pretty boring.

my niece ANNIKA!
i need to go see her. i usually see her once a month but due to budgetary restrictions (I am desperately broke right now) i haven't been to see her in a sometime and won't until the 15th of October and I miss her.

here she is studying a physics textbook in the car and here she is making a mean face:

my niece is fantastic and i think that largely owing to the big extended group of grown-ups who surround her with love and attention.  my sister is a single mom but ani has my brother, her grandma, her great-grandma, four aunts, a great aunt and multitude of second cousins in her life on the day-to-dat which is awesome.

ok there's lots more i love in this big wide world and i am just too tired to write about it.  did lots of gymming today and went to the flea market store too and got two plates with trees on them and that james frey book and a wooden duck and i think that's it.  i went to the dollar store too and bought some candy.  ok i'm done for now.

psa for other new yorkers

those who follow my twitter feed may have noticed a fun little adventure i had the other day when i forgot my metrocard was empty and i tried to go to work.  i didn't have time to go back and i didn't have my wallet with me.  all i had was a winning scratch ticket which i thought was worth 2 dollars.  fortunately i was wrong and it was worth 4, but i also had to rely on the kindness of strangers and absence of transit cops on the select bus.  victory.

i borrowed bus fare from my boss to get home after work and i bought a metrocard at the 231st street station and i almost threw out the new card instead of the empy.  so when i saw this pic on everydayposterseveryday i had to share :)

 i also like this one:

but i don't have netflicks.

Human powered ornithopter!

University of Toronto engineering student Todd Reichert has created the first human-powered flying machine that flies like a bird, allowing a human to control giants wings which flap to create lift!  The machine, called "The Snowbird," uses a system of ropes and pulleys to control the giant wings which compose it's 105ft wingspan.

for more please visit: http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2010-09/video-canadian-student-flies-bird-first-time-using-record-setting-ornithopter

It is so cool to see one of the last "flying firsts" happen in my lifetime.  I also really like the word "ornithopter."

Things I Love Thursday :) TILT TIME!

1. my papa and my mom.  my dad always has my back, no matter what i do.  and he is my #1 fan.  and my mom is so sweet.  when she heard my fridge died she wanted to buy me another one, even though she can't afford it.  fortunately Brian fixed it.  Oh and when I was very sick both of them called me a lot to take care of me!!

2. CalorieCount
I've used this free and relatively easy-to-use website for years.  Last time I was using it religiously I was able to drop fifty pounds and keep track of all my nutrients and minerals.  This time I'm using it to drop ten and I started yesterday and I've already dropped weight!  By using math, graphs, and clear displays I'm able to track what I need to reach my goals without succumbing to "magical thinking" or other unhealthy thought patterns.

3. My garden!!  It is a bit decimated (I like that word, decimate technically means to kill every tenth man) but it still produces.  I decided to put up some basil today.  I upcycled a few things round the house and it came out quite nice.  I think I will give one to my friends for their housewarming.  Or maybe I will give them a plant of basil I don't know.  But it's nice to have on hand.
and yes, I have my own pinking shears.  My apartment is a wonderland of stuff like that.

5. My knee being better and my lil sister for helping me find out what kind of exercises to do to stop it from happening again.  She's in physical therapy school and she's a single mom and she's amazing :)  I love her so much.  She is very positive and fit and energetic and hardworking,  She inspires me.

6. Oh and MIR MIR!!  my sister is the best she brought me soup and is helping me with my career.  she always makes time to talk with me, whether it is something important or I just need directions to the nearest Bank Of America ATM. (I don't have a SmartPhone so i just call my SmartSis).  And we are going to go to Spa Castle for my birthday!!!!!!!  which is november 2nd and don't you forget it.  Buy me presents from the amazon wishlist that is linked somewhere on the right-hand column of this page, or from somewheres else, or not :)

Patricia Waller

is amazing.

my fridge died today

long live my fridge.  well when i go get one in the morning.  i filled the mostly-dead fridge with ice to save my foods.  maybe it will work.  who knows?

today my little charges started school.  kindergarten for the 5 y.o. and third grade for the 8 y.o.  they did alright.  chloe likes her teacher and has a friend in her class.  soph's nervous about geometry, even though she has nothing to worry about.  she knows about rhombuses and nonagons and such.  glad we watched out TMBG Here Comes the Science videos this summer :)

i'm a really, really good nanny.  last night i watched a new charge named carmella.  she's two and pretty awesome.  she is pretty decent at using the potty which impressed me, and knows her shapes fairly well.  gonna have to do more work with colors because she guesses everything is lellow or pink.  i like lellow.  her mom was very impressed with how i integrate learning activities into fun and active play, which made me happy.  of course i learned this over time.  it is boring to just play with kids, it is better to play with them and teach them stuff.  and if you just teach them stuff they get bored and frustrated, so it is much better to mix it up into a game, and to break those games up with physical activities.

um what else.  i'm getting a new kid.  her name's ava and she lives in the same building with sophie and chloe and she goes to the same school.  three days a week i'm picking her up and hanging out.  bonus for me on the financial side and also in the job-not-being-boring department.

today i saw my friend andrushka and his mom at the library.  he is pretty cool.  he's in first grade now and he likes rockets and space and stuff and he is trilingual which is just amazing and i'm wishing i was even bilingual!  he speaks English and Georgian and Russian.  he also had bright red hair which i like because it reminds me of my niece Annika who is like the light of my life.

henry came to visit me lots this week because he was home from iraq to go to a wedding.  i like him lots.  he is coming back for a long while in about a month so we shall see what's what.

i decided what i am going to school for, specifically. i want to do a master's of science in early childhood education but that job market is the pits right now.   and i am so tired of being desperately poor.  so instead i am going to do a master's in TESOL.
probably at CUNY hunter.

ok time to go to sleep i have to get up early to go to the used appliance store.  and i have to have my wits about me because they don't speak English over there just Spanglish and i don't want to get anything mixed up, especially not features or prices.  i should probably ask the guy to write stuff down in spanish, that's what i did last time and it worked because translating writing is much easier for me than fast speech.

in closing i want to wish everyone a happy rosh hashanah!
